A training Jet ?? With propeller. Rather unusual
No Felidea, its not unusual.
Its a so called turboprop, meaning its powered by a shaft turbine that deliveres its power via a motor shaft to the propeller.
That allows the student to get familiar with operating a turbine. It has a lot of similarities to a regular turbine jet, like i.e. delayed spool up times and a broad range of speed. These planes also feature a lot of the systems a comparable fighter jet would have (navigation, weapon operation), so students can pratice in real world without using a regular jet aircraft. That drastically reduces the costs for training new pilots.
So you see, there are a lot of benefits to a plane like this. There are also a lot of comparable platforms, for example: Pilatus PC-21, Pilatus PC-7, Beechcraft T-6B Texan or Aermacchi SF-260 TP. Its a very succesful platform/idea!
Should design Embraer 314 Super Tucano instead.
