Fenix – A320 MSFS Sharklets Available [Video]

Fenix has announced the long-awaited release of Sharklets for the A320 in Microsoft Flight Simulator. This update includes numerous refinements, notably to the aircraft’s aerodynamics and flight model, which account for subtle differences in lift and drag that affect flight characteristics like flare and approach. While visual changes like the Sharklet model are a highlight, much of the update involves fine-tuning the A320’s handling to retain its familiar feel. Updates to the Elevator and Aileron computers, Spoiler Elevator computers, and Flight Augmentation computers ensure these refinements mirror the real-world Sharklet-equipped A320.

A significant focus of the update is the new Load Alleviation Function (LAF), designed to minimize wing loading stress caused by the added weight and structure of the Sharklets. LAF deploys ailerons and spoilers automatically under specific conditions to reduce wing flex, which was recreated with a custom wingflex model that accounts for factors like fuel distribution. The wingflex simulation, now independent from the default MSFS physics, adds authenticity and is part of a broader effort to enhance ground handling and tiller responsiveness across Fenix’s A32X fleet.

Visual updates to the Sharklet variant include LED lighting enhancements, such as brighter NAV lights and strobes with strobe blockers for a more realistic look without affecting performance. Fenix has also added over 100 Sharklet-specific liveries, bringing the total livery count to over 600, with plans to streamline livery management in the future. The development team has worked meticulously to replicate the aesthetic and functional distinctions between the Sharklet and wingtip fence variants, enhancing the realism of the simulation.

In terms of future plans of the upcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Fenix has not yet received access to the development environment, so compatibility updates for the new platform will be evaluated after its release. Their focus will initially be on ensuring stability, with additional features to be assessed after they’ve had the opportunity to fully explore FS2024’s capabilities.
