Just Flight – RJ Professional MSFS24/20 | Systems Guide #1 – IRS – Inertial Reference System

The RJ Professional for MSFS24/20 simulates the Inertial Reference System (IRS) with two independent units, each featuring an Inertial Reference Unit (IRU) and a Signal Generator (SG) for navigation and altitude data display. IRS1 pairs with SG1, while IRS2 pairs with SG2. Prior to flight, the IRSs must be aligned by setting the switches to ALN, entering the aircraft’s position in the FMS, and switching to NAV. This process ensures accurate navigation data, with alignment times varying based on latitude—ranging from 2.5 minutes near the equator to up to 15 minutes at 70° latitudes. The alignment process is complete when the “NAV OFF” annunciators extinguish.

A fast align feature enhances the user experience, allowing quicker alignment from a Cold and Dark state. By toggling the IRS switches through OFF > ALN > NAV > ALN, the process accelerates significantly. The simulation also incorporates a baulk mechanism, requiring users to click and pull the switches when transitioning from NAV to ALN, mirroring the real aircraft’s design and preventing accidental misalignment.

For additional guidance, Just Flight has shared FAQs and a detailed tutorial video series to help users understand and utilize the IRS alignment process effectively. The next tutorial installment will cover the TRP and VNAV systems, further enhancing the realism and functionality of the RJ Professional.
