Chumphon Airport is one of the 47 airports in Thailand, serving primarily the islands of the Gulf of Thailand – Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan, and Koh Tao. It is located in Tambon Chum Kho, Pathio district in Chumphon, and is 40-kilometers north of the city center. In 2008, the airport reopened after a 9-year closure. Today, it serves as a gateway to the islands in the Gulf of Thailand.
Due to the increasing number of passengers flying in and out of Chumphon, the government of Thailand announced plans in 2015 to expand the domestic airport in a bid to accommodate the growing number of travellers.
The expansion program covers two phases, the first being the construction of a 2.5-billion baht runway, a flight training school, a hangar, as well as the expansion of terminals to cater to wider-bodied aircraft.
