The alpha version of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 has revealed staggering internet data consumption, with reports showing up to 81GB (gigabytes) per hour in heavily detailed areas. The 2024 version uses significantly more bandwidth compared to its predecessor, which averaged 100 Mbps in urban areas. This increase is attributed to a reduction in installation size and a higher reliance on real-time data streaming.
Despite the heavy data usage, the base game size is relatively smaller, weighing 30GB compared to Flight Simulator 2020’s 130–400GB range. The game dynamically adjusts its graphics settings based on available bandwidth, providing flexibility. However, players with slower or capped data plans may struggle to run it optimally, especially on mobile networks like 4G or 5G.
While the potential for incredible photorealistic environments is high, the new bandwidth demands might limit access for those without fast and unlimited internet connections, or those with data caps. Fiber optic and unlimited data is strongly recommended for the best experience.
I bet 2028’s version it will be ortho tiles ala Xplane.
Worth upgrading? Or just stick with MSFS2020? When 6G is available and at reasonable prices, I might consider it then
