We have one of our readers to thank for pointing this one out to us, but “Space Engine“, by Vladimir Romanyuk, is a free piece of software that, while maybe not a spaceflight simulator, might appeal to those of you interested in astral bodies.
Dubbing itself “space simulation software”, Space Engine uses procedural techniques to allow you to fly a camera through space, visiting stars and planets as you reach them. It does include a mode that causes the camera to behave like a space vessel, but there’s no dogfighting or trading to be done in this one.
What is present are some pretty fantastic graphics, with, according to the description, all types of celestial bodies represented. It’s free, so why not download it and take a look for yourself?

VERY impressive, I used one of the long videos in a class, everyone was in awe. I’ve downloaded it, haven’t had the time to install it yet. Looking forward to.
